The Mica Mountain Cross Country team had its most successful season yet. Moving to Division 2 this year meant fierce competition from all angles so the team set out an ambitious plan: attack summer training, take the Varsity squads to Flagstaff early in the season for evaluation, build confidence through the whole team attending the Woodbridge Invitational in California, and keeping a laser focus on Sectionals and State. Flagstaff delivered high altitude and high finishes. The boys team snatched their first trophy of the season and sophomore Hailey Burke had a breakout race. At Woodbridge the entire team set new PRs with Lucas Williams breaking the 15 minute mark running 14:56 and lifting the whole team to new heights. At Sectionals the girls ran a fierce race finishing as section Runner Up behind Ironwood Ridge and the boys clinched their first Sectional Title. Senior Noah Macias became the school's first Section Champion and provided motivation for the squad heading into State. Running together is key in this sport and leaning on your teammates is vital. As State approached, both teams maintained their cool and went into battle. The girls team, all of whom plan to return again next year, finished an impressive 4th place. The boys raced as hard as ever to finish 2nd behind Flagstaff. When you see someone out running in your neighborhood, jogging up Tumamoc Hill, or heading to Mt. Lemmon with running shoes on, they might have the ambition to become a better runner. In addition to running, this team is a family dedicated to one another, improving their campus and community, and providing positive vibes all around. They invite you to come run the
Vail Jingle Trail on Saturday, December 14th at Mica Mountain High School
. They are collecting new and unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots and putting on a jolly holiday-themed kids 1k and 5k. They will be out on the course cheering you on along the way. Keep an eye out...this team is on the rise!
