# Math

**Vision:** Mica Mountain math department builds a foundation for students to have an influence in the world through heightened mathematical awareness, problem-solving, critical thinking, and service opportunities with an emphasis on mathematics achievement, leadership, character development, and collaboration.

Four math credits are required for graduation. Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II are required for all students. If a high school math credit is earned in middle school and passed with a B or better, an official transcript must be received to award high school credit.

**Algebra I**

In this course, students use the language of algebra, its terms, symbols, and logic to solve problems, describe relationships and patterns, and apply this language to real-life situations. Students will use algebraic, numerical, and graphical representations to solve realistic problems and to acquire the mathematics skills necessary for Geometry and Algebra II. A graphing calculator is required for this course.

**Algebra II**

In this course, students will build upon the concepts and skills learned in previous mathematics courses. Students will study functions and relations, with an emphasis placed on conceptual understanding, graphical representation, and modeling. Trigonometry concepts are introduced and developed. Using the knowledge they acquire in this course, students will perform data analysis and solve real problems. This course is designed to prepare students for college-level mathematics. A TI 84 graphing calculator is required for this course.

**Algebra II Honors**

In this course, students will build upon the concepts and skills learned in previous mathematics courses at a more extensive breadth, depth, and pace than in Algebra 2. Students will study functions and relations, with an emphasis placed on conceptual understanding, graphical representation, and applications through the creation of mathematical models. Trigonometry concepts are introduced, developed, and extended. This rigorous course is designed to prepare students who excel in mathematics for future Honors and AP courses. A TI 84 graphing calculator is required for this course.

**Requirements: **Additional homework. Students in any Honors course should maintain a C average to remain in the class.

**AP Calculus AB**

In this course, students will build an enduring mathematical understanding of the why and how of mathematics through mastery of calculus concepts. Students will apply limits, differentiation, and integration strategies and connect topics throughout mathematics to solve diverse real-world problems. This rigorous course emphasizes graphical, numerical, and algebraic methods, is comparable to the first semester of calculus taught at colleges and universities, and will prepare students to take the AP Calculus AB exam.

**AP Calculus BC**

In this course, students will build an enduring mathematical understanding of the why and how of mathematics through mastery of calculus concepts. Students will apply strategies of differentiation and integration to arithmetic, trigonometric, and transcendental functions. Additional topics include vectors, parametric equations, sequences, and series, and students will connect topics throughout mathematics to solve diverse real-world problems. This rigorous course emphasizes graphical, numerical, and algebraic methods and is comparable to the second semester of calculus taught at colleges and universities. At the end of this course, students will be prepared to take the AP Calculus BC exam.

**AP Statistics **

This course aims to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from the pattern, Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study, Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation, and Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses. This course is comparable to the first semester Statistics course taught at colleges and universities. At the end of this course, students will be prepared to take the AP Statistics exam.

**College Algebra – MAT 151**

In this course, students will build upon fundamental algebraic concepts and develop the necessary skills needed to formulate and solve algebraic problems. Students will develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills, apply prior knowledge, and make connections of algebraic concepts to real-life applications. Using the knowledge they acquire in this course, students will establish the skills needed to meet the mathematical demands of a technological society, and communicate mathematical ideas using symbolic and written forms. This course is designed to prepare students for the next college-level mathematics course. A TI 84 graphing calculator is required for this course

**Advanced Functions/Modeling **

The purpose of this course is to create opportunities for high school students to model the mathematical ideas learned in previous courses and extend those ideas in a project-based, collaborative, enriching environment. Students should leave this course with an increased understanding of (1) how mathematical ideas are modeled in the real world, (2) how google office can support mathematical modeling, and (3) how collaboration builds a strong project management team. Students will be required to follow the design process as a collaborative team, including: defining a problem, collecting information, brainstorm/analyzing, developing solutions/building a model, presenting ideas and receiving feedback, improving the design based on feedback, and presenting the final project. Topics studied will include data analysis, regression models, systems of equations, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric models, statistics, financial literacy, number theory, engineering, and architecture.

**Geometry**

**Geometry Honors**

In this course, students use the language of geometry, its vocabulary, symbols, and logic, in order to make and prove conjectures, and develop an understanding of geometric principles and relationships at a faster pace and a greater depth than Geometry. Using the properties of geometric figures, students will write formal proofs, solve problems involving algebra and real-life situations, and visualize and draw geometric figures. In addition, students in this course will study a greater breadth of geometric concepts. This rigorous course is designed to prepare students who excel in mathematics for future Honors courses.

Using the knowledge they acquire in this course, students will establish the skills needed to meet the mathematical demands of a technological society, and communicate mathematical ideas using symbolic and written forms. This course is designed to prepare students for the next college-level mathematics course. A TI 84 graphing calculator is required for this course.

In this course, students will build upon previous knowledge of algebra, geometry, and functions and extend advanced algebraic and trigonometric concepts into a preparatory course for calculus. This course emphasizes clear communication of mathematical ideas and problem solving through independent reasoning, real-world application, technology, and collaboration. Students will study and tackle problems that are more challenging and explore advanced topics. This rigorous course is designed to prepare motivated students who excel in mathematics for AP Calculus AB and/or AP Statistics. Students must have earned an A or B in Algebra II to be considered for this course. Students must maintain a C or better to remain in the course at the end of semester one. A TI 84 graphing calculator is required for this course.
